he duffle cloth that was made at the Flemish town of duffle, near Antwerp in Belgium, was a heavy woolen cloth, closely woven, to provide warmth during extreme winter months. British Navy officers used wool duffle coats, to protect themselves against the extremely cold and biting winds of the Atlantic and the North Sea, while on duty during the World War I. They also used duffle bags to store their personal belongings. Just before the start of World War II, the duffle coat was modified to the traditional British Navy Duffle. In the year 1951, The Ministry of defence approached Mr. Harold Morris, a dealer in gloves and overalls, to help dispose off the post-war surplus supplies of wool duffle coats. Mr. Morris sold these through his company Gloverall and these became available to civilians. Gloverall manufactures the duffle coats to this day, in different versions and colors.
The original wool duffle coat was a loose-fitting, knee length, natural camel colored garment, lined with woolly plaid on the insides, a large unattached hood with buttons about the neck to attach the hood, a neck strap, reinforced shoulders, two enormous pockets and four wooden or horn toggle fastenings with rope or leather loops to attach the toggles. The wool duffle coats made now are available in different colors with slight variations to the materials used for the toggles and loops. Gloverall has introduced some contemporary designs for their duffle coats with a slim cut, though not veering away too much from the traditional look but incorporating some vibrant colors.
Stussy collaborated with Gloverall to offer duffle coats in three colors: beige, navy and greenish gray, and the “Mobilis in Mobile” slogan written on the back inner lining. In yet another collaboration, Junya Watanabe and Gloverall presented a navy blue duffle coat with traditional features but with a new additional feature; leather patches on the shoulder and elbows.
Wearing duffle coats in the wet weather gives off an offensive smell. Gloverall has introduced a red SS10 nylon edition, for spring/summer 2010, which takes care of the yucky smell.
